Sydney Chapter - Newcastle Ride 30 March 2008
On Sunday, 30th March 2008, The MMAA Inc – Sydney Chapter, held a meeting at the Turramurra Lodge. The idea was to hold this meeting and then have a ride to Newcastle. Unfortunately, there were only 4 members who attended, or should I say 3 members and another brother who actually joined this chapter on the morning.
After the meeting we were about to set off on the ride when another member from the Central Coast Chapter joined us. We proceeded along the way and stopped at Berowra for petrol, and then onto Cowan to a Motorcycle meeting place called “Pie In The Sky” Whilst there we had Coffees and other drinks, as well as a bite to eat. During this time, I received a call from a brother from Newcastle who informed me that he was on his way to meet up with us at “Pie In The Sky” and asked us to wait for him. He eventually turned up with his wife and then we set off again with Ross and Julie who led the way into Newcastle and directly to Harry’s Café De Wheels for lunch as arranged.
One of our riders had instructions on how to get there, but if we followed them, I am sure we would still be trying to find it. Some photos were taken, which can be seen in the website "Gallery". Those pictured are Allan Mason, Peter Kalkhoven (New Member), Roger “Lizard” Coates, Basil Freedman, Ross & Julie Slade – Newcastle, and Lynden Norgate.
After the photo was taken, we all said farewell to Ross and Julie, who then led the way to a service station so that the “Harley’s and Harley look alikes” could fill up their tanks. Once all that was completed, we left Newcastle at 2.00pm and headed back to Sydney. As we only traveled along the freeway, it took most of us a little over 2 hours to get home.

All in all, it was a wonderful day, with great weather; good company and all of us had a wonderful time. We hope to plan our next ride to take place in the near future and may go south this time.
P.S. Late on Sunday night, I received a call from Tony Cross from Tamworth. Tamworth have just set up their chapter, commencing with 9 members, four of which are new to the MMAA. This was achieved after the meeting and before their ride.
It is a fantastic result and as a result of this chapter being formed, I suggested to Tony that Sydney and Tamworth should have a meeting place established. We agreed that the best place would be Musselbrook or around there. We are organizing this at the moment, and I hope that we can get more riders to come with me to meet our new brothers from Tamworth.

Re meeting held on Sunday in Tamworth, it was a great success and attended by all MMAA members known to us in this area, with the exception to John Ludewig who unfortunately had to work on the day.
Due to the enthusiasm and commitment of those present we have been able to form a chapter to service the North West portion of N.S.W. The meeting was conducted in an orderly and professional manner and a hard copy of the minutes of that meeting have been sent to you by mail for consideration for approval.
Attached is a photo of those present on the day and are all members of the MMAA. From left to right: Tony & Jenny Cross, Sandra & Rene Markerink, Peter & Debbie Smith and Wendy & Trevor Capararo.
A short ride to a small village at the top of the range for lunch was participated in and a more pleasant way to finish a day could not be found with members basking in the autumn sun on the lawn reluctant to venture home.

Treasurers Report:
In the absence of David Anthony, Michael Lampadarios reported an income of approximately $2,150.00 which comprised membership, badges and other regalia monies. The bank balance as at 22/1/05 was reported as $895.00. The expenditure (the difference of the two) comprised badges, T shirts (old) and belt buckles. Michael also advised that an order for metal badges with square & compass had been placed but not yet received.
(In the absence of accurate figures the expenditure was estimated at $1,910.00 taking into account the bank balance as at 22/1/04 of $655.00….Secretary)
Michael advised that Membership Renewal Forms were sent via email however some had come back due to incorrect email addresses. Michael stressed it was important that the Membership Renewal Forms reflect the current address details for all renewing members to ensure an accurate database of members.

Michael asked for recruiting strategies other than via the internet. Paul Gimbert suggested the ideas of Geoff Greaves re promotion and this was discussed.
Michael also suggested two areas of membership recruitment; Ausport and Motorcycle Council of NSW Inc. Letters received from both bodies were tabled and passed around to all members present.
Greg Marshall advised that the Victorian Masonic Motorcycle Association (VMMA) were aggressive by badgering prospective members and that was their main form of recruitment.
Michael advised that the MMAA National Website was linked to Masons Connect, Freemasons Motorcycle Club Netherlands, Bikers Den and virtually any motor cycle Website (even VMMA). Michael also advised that the Website was also linked with the Masonic Association of Canada and a new Chapter had been formed there consisting 20 members.
Allan Talbot advised that the Website did not appear to be updated on a regular basis. Michael responded that the Photo Gallery was very small (only 10mb) and was not updated on a regular basis but that Newsletters, Calendar Dates and Contacts were. Michael also advised that as Websites cost money it was important that the Association be financial.
Bombala President:
Paul Gimbert reported that only one ride had been organised and that Bombala membership totalled 13.
Paul advised that the Bombala Chapter were meeting monthly and had experienced difficulty in funding.
Paul wished to put an emphasis on Associate Member recruiting as some members were located some distance away which made it hard for attendance.
Paul felt 2005 would be a better year with more rides organised. Paul confirmed that members were consolidated and keeping strong as a Chapter.
Paul advised a ride calendar would be produced for all MMAA members.
Paul also advised that Bombala was trying to visit other Lodges and had adopted a “dress code” of blue shirt; string tie; black vest; (with badges/patches) and black pants. He advised it was hard to regulate a “dress code” for Associate Members.
Michael Lampadarios suggested that in his experience the white shirt was more acceptable for Lodge visits.
Greg Marshall advised that the VMMA had approached Grand Lodge of Victoria to get a ruling on a visiting “dress code”. Grand Lodge had advised it considered the white shirt; bow tie; black pants; (leather/jeans) and vest acceptable. Greg also advised the VMMA had a Travelling Warrant and were also performing Installations.
General Business:
Cliff Hobson advised that MMAA shirts and merchandise were on display.
Members were advised that future rides were being planned for March (to Young) and the Nabia Motorcycle Museum (on a date to be advised). The Anzac Day weekend was suggested for the Nabia Motorcycle Museum ride. The cost of the Nabia ride was $20.00 per head which included a BBQ dinner & BBQ breakfast together with admission to the museum and private collection. A ride to Coffs Harbour for Keith Reynolds Installation was also planned for the end of May.
Michael Lampadarios asked Chapters if they were happy to issue membership cards and this received a mixed response.
Michael also suggested a ride fee of $5.00 for all participants.
Michael suggested purchasing a Membership Program to monitor members’ details. It was recommended that free Databases be used first before spending any MMAA funds.

He advised the name Masonic Motorcycle Association of Australia Inc had been reserved with the NSW Department of Fair Trading. Cliff advised he now had the code for the Website and would be working to update it. He also advised that even though there had been a net loss in membership he hoped the Association would start gaining new members. Cliff felt the MMAA had started to make good process with the teething issues that had hampered the National Body since its inception.

Paul Gimbert advised that they had held a meeting before the AGM and invited prospective non members. Paul advised that some prospective members questioned what advantages the MMAA had to offer them. Paul felt it was a hard question to answer but advised there was still interest there.

CC/S had a core number of members who were still meeting and the CC/S were continuing to support “Camp Breakaway” annually. CC/S had recently organised a ride to Tamworth to attend a lodge meeting and to meet some one the new members. Cliff advised that through money raised in the Chapter they were able to purchase tote bags for the disabled persons that they support (with their names painted on them),. Cliff went on to say that over $1,000 had been raised in combination with Lodge Morning Star for a local disabled girl. Cliff suggested that perhaps they should visit other Motorcycle Clubs like Ulysses to create an interest. Cliff felt the potential was there.

Terry Webster reported that Community Connections were providing full computer systems to disadvantaged families with dial up internet connection for their use (free of charge). He advised computers had been donated from companies which also promoted MMAA in the Craft and funds had also been donated by the Craft. Terry advised that $510.00 had been donated to Community Connections by the combined effort of Werribee Lodge raising $255.00 and the Victoria Chapter matching this figure. Terry went on to say that the VMMA was a bike Association that was very active in Victoria and received a lot of press from the Victoria Freemasonry Magazine. This publicity contributed to them thriving whereas the Victoria Chapter of the MMAA was not. The VMMA are known to visit Lodges en-masse.

It was felt that it was up to the individual members to choose whether they wore their badges or not. Terry Webster sends out samples of “set up” of badges to all new members. Cliff stated that he felt that the position of Sergeant at Arms was not really required and asked for feedback on this suggestion. Wendy Capararo suggested that the Sergeant At Arms was a role that was more relevant to the Back Patch Clubs (eg Rebels, Jokers). Cliff related a conversation with several CC/S riders who said that if had to be shepherded as they rode, they would prefer not to ride. All agreed that riders wanted to ride safely and were in agreement with Roger Coates that the staggered formation was the best recommendation. Much discussion ensued with the validity of the role and a recommendation was made for a name change to National Road Captain.

Grant Bates advised that the general feeling in the Victoria Chapter was that the Chapter did not want to relinquish their Incorporation status. Victoria would relinquish their Incorporation only if NSW were unable to use the name reserved.
